Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States primarily designed to provide coverage for individuals aged 65 and older. However, it also covers certain younger people with disabilities and individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Established in 1965 under the Social Security Act, Medicare helps to cover hospital stays, medical services, and prescription drugs, thus playing a crucial role in ensuring access to necessary medical care for millions of Americans.
The program is divided into different parts: Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care services; Part B covers outpatient care, preventive services, and certain doctors’ services; Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, offers an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits through private health plans; and Part D provides prescription drug coverage. These parts work together to offer comprehensive healthcare coverage, helping to mitigate the high costs associated with medical care for eligible individuals.

Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and home health services. It ensures that beneficiaries receive necessary medical care without the burden of significant hospital bills.

Part B of Medicare covers outpatient care, preventive services, certain doctor services, and durable medical equipment. This includes routine doctor visits, lab tests, and screenings, helping to catch and treat health issues early.

Also known as Medicare Advantage, Part C plans are offered by private insurers and provide an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits. These plans often include additional benefits such as vision, dental, and wellness programs, beyond what is covered under Parts A and B.

Medicare Part D offers prescription drug coverage, which helps lower the costs of medications. Beneficiaries can choose from various plans to find one that best suits their medication needs, providing significant savings on essential prescriptions.
